First of all – what are Smart Meters?

Smart Meters are wireless digital utility meters that broadcast customers’ gas & electric usage information to utilities in near real-time. Smart Meters contain Pulsed Microwave Radio Frequency (RF) transmitters and receivers in order to be remotely controllable and readable.  When the Smart Grid is in place, Smart Meters will not only keep track of how much gas/electrical energy or water you are using, but it will be able to control, regulate, and ration your use of that utility. If whichever utility company or government agency is micro-managing your energy usage in future decides that you are using too much heat in the winter, too many cooling fans in the summer, or too much hot water in your showers or washing machine (even if you are willing to pay for that extra usage), your energy will be automatically turned down.  This becomes all the more serious when you factor our inalienable human need for water into the utility equation.

In addition, the vision for Smart Homes is to have all appliances & devices replaced with those containing RFID Pulsed Microwave Radiation Transmitters for even more regulation and control, but even your old lamps & hairdryers will be identifiable and manageable through digital signal processing (DSP) identifiers unique to each kind of energy-dependent device. However, if you have renewed any appliances in the last two years it is possible that these are already Home Area Network (HAN)-enabled, and currently broadcasting your energy usage via Pulsed Microwave Radiation in preparation for a Smart Meter to tune in.

To most people, this is a step too far into our private lives and a worrying health threat which has already impacted the wellbeing of people in the US and Canada where Smart Meters are also being phased in.  We feel that Smart Metering represents a definitive attempt to take control of every aspect of our home energy use and will hand utility companies an extremely invasive means of modelling our energy usage behaviour in order to make larger profits and selling on our data to the highest bidder. People who are informed about the facts would never knowingly consent to such a step if they were asked. Regrettably, they are not being asked.

We therefore want Smart Meters STOPPED.

Stop Smart Meters! (uk) is a non-partisan, not-for-profit voice calling for an immediate halt to the Smart Meter programme. We are concerned about many significant problems associated with Smart Meters, including major health risks (associated with pulsed microwaves), unwarranted privacy violations, safety issues and the loss of sovereignty & control of our appliances, devices and utilities in the sanctity of our homes. We encourage everyone to look into this programme for themselves, to get informed about the real issues at stake and say “No”.
